General Practice Training Learning Networks has worked, over the past few years, to provide Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes practices with a high quality responsive portfolio of learning opportunities. Their aim is to enable every team member to achieve his or her full potential. There have been numerous changes since the advent of PCTs (and this is changing yet again) however training courses geared towards core roles in general practice have always been of paramount importance. Learning and development programmes for all primary care teams continue to be provided through Learning Networks. Steve and Christina Machan still support you in your learning and taking this process forward. Christina is responsible for planning, preparing, developing and implementing all programmes across primary care whilst Steve is taking a strategic and technical role, supporting IT and e-learning, as well as undertaking consultancy roles for the PCTs and facilitating key workshops. You will continue to have access to many integrated learning programmes, open to anyone who feels it would be beneficial to his or her role. These will be open to all who feel they will benefit, HCAs, team leaders, supervisors, reception managers and new managers. There will be no divide between different job roles: we will be encouraging all primary health care teams in practices to learn and develop together. There is support available for staff in getting to grips with e-learning programmes. We welcome your feedback not only for our training needs analysis but at any stage of the learning cycle or any part of the year.
Christina Machan BSc (Hons) Psychology Christina has a lifetime's experience of the NHS, working in a variety of exciting roles in both secondary and primary care. These have included medical audit, complaints management and latterly, 16 years in developing programmes for general practice teams in Buckinghamshire. Working to develop and implement a range of training programme serving all primary healthcare teams and the creation of an Open University Diploma for Health Care Assistants provided plenty of challenges. Christina's training manual has become legendary amongs Buckinghamshire practices. Christina continues her work as an Education and Development consultant for Learning Networks. Steve Machan MA, BSc, Dip Ed. Steve has been in the education and learning environment for most of his life. He particularly enjoys the development side of the role. He has written inspirational workshops to support workplace skills and role changes within general practice teams. He is equally at home in front of a crowd or supporting individuals at their own desk and if one phrase was to be found to describe his style it would be that he enables others to succeed. The introduction of 'IT Help At Hand' several years ago paved the way to planning, preparing and developing general practice training within the NHS. Steve's goal initially was to improve IT literacy in a safe and secure environment and this proved to be an extremely succesful. way of encouraging staff to take on new learning in their own personal space. One of his early commissions was with Bedfordshire PCT; their brief included supporting nurses during the introduction of computerised systems. Improving competence in the workplace is a continual challenge and this can only be achieved by instilling confidence in each individual learner. This is something that comes naturally and runs like a thread through everything he does Steve has been working in a consultancy capacity for PCTs for the past few years. He also runs key workshops for Learning Networks and for practices dueing protected learning time (PLT). Steve's portfolio includes Receptionist Development Programme- Communication, Conflict Management etc Senior Reception Managers/Supervisors programme - Leadership Skills Registering Visitors from Overseas - a programme to help those on the front line IT desk-side support for groups of staff in their own environment Support for Choose and Book
